Spot Removal Steps
1. Act Quickly!
Many spots and spills are easier to address when treated promptly. The longer a spill remains on carpet or upholstery, the more difficult it may become to improve the appearance of the affected area. Keep in mind that results can vary depending on carpet type, stain type, and previous treatments.
2. Blot Liquids
Use an absorbent white cloth or plain white paper towels to gently blot liquids. Avoid printed towels or colored cloths that could transfer dye onto the carpet.
3. Avoid Scrubbing the Area!
Scrubbing may affect carpet fibers or spread the spill further. Continue blotting with a dry cloth or paper towels until excess moisture has been absorbed. For semi-solid spills, gently lift material with a spoon. Solid debris can often be vacuumed once dry.
4. Test Any Cleaning Solution First
Before using any spot-cleaning product, test it in a less visible area to check for possible color transfer or fiber changes. Apply a small amount to the test area and blot with a white cloth before proceeding.
5. Apply Cleaning Solution Carefully
Apply a small amount of the selected cleaning solution to a clean white cloth and gently work it into the affected area.
6. Work From the Outside In
Start from the outer edge of the spill and move toward the center to help reduce spreading. Continue blotting gently rather than scrubbing.
7. Repeat as Needed
Continue using the selected cleaning solution as long as transfer from the affected area continues onto the cloth. Multiple applications may be necessary depending on the type and age of the spill.
8. Be Patient
Some spots may require several treatment attempts to improve the appearance of the affected area.
9. Rinse the Area
After spot cleaning, lightly rinse the area with cold water and blot dry to help remove any remaining cleaning solution residue.
10. Help the Area Dry
Place a layer of plain white paper towels over the damp area and weigh it down with a flat object to help absorb remaining moisture. Replace towels as needed until the area is dry.
